"Two days after that play closed a year ago last August I came back to Alabama and spent two years with mother," Ms. But the call came, and it was back to New York to play Big Mama throughout the play's Broadway run. "I talked with him and read for him, then returned to Alabama thinking I didn't have much of a chance," she said. The illness of her mother brought her back to Alabama for nine months before she was summoned to New York to meet the director of a coming production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Then there was a Broadway revival of Arsenic and Old Lace in 1986-87 and a run at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis as Amanda in The Glass Menagerie. Holliday has done television movies as well as a live television production of All the Way Home for NBC. One of those new projects was Alice, and thus the call went out for Polly Holliday. And the man who cast that movie was in charge of new projects for Warner Bros. "Dustin Hoffman left after the show opened to do the movie All the President's Men," she said, "and he recommended me for a small part in that film. And that, in turn, eventually led to her casting as Flo. One of the first was the Broadway show All Over Town, which was directed by Dustin Hoffman. The big time, before Flo, meant roles on Broadway and in the movies. Holliday remained with the Asolo for 10 years before heading on to the big time. She left Florida State for Sarasota, where she taught for a year before making a change that was a turning point in her career _ becoming a member of the Asolo State Theater's first repertory company. ![]()
